Thinking about my father’s early research dealing with solar energy using mirrors, I reflect images of energy infrastructure in a curved, circular mirror. The resulting reflections of power lines, oil derricks, crude oil, and the sun serve as points of departure for this suite of paintings on paper. The resulting artworks question direct perceptions of oil, sunlight, and electricity, suggesting celestial mechanics, electromagnetic fields, or astral watchers. I work improvisationally with an interest in a visceral materiality, dissolution, and luminosity. By mining these mercurial distortions, these works reveal an instability in entrenched structures, signaling either the brink of collapse or the potential for transformation.
